How to Use an Online Ruler (Step-by-Step, With Real Examples)
A practical guide to measuring real objects on your screen. Set up an accurate online ruler on a laptop, monitor, phone or tablet, read cm and inch marks correctly, and work through real examples like rings, screws and photos.
Step 1: Why Calibration Is Essential
A computer screen or smartphone display doesn't know its own physical dimensions in the real world. By default, web browsers treat 96 CSS pixels as one "inch".
However, modern screens have vastly different pixel densities (e.g. 113 PPI on a MacBook, 140+ PPI on a phone, 163 PPI on a 4K monitor). Without calibration, a 10 cm line on your screen might only be 6.5 cm in reality!
On Maßband Online, click the Calibrate button and choose your device preset or align a standard credit card (which is strictly 85.60 mm wide according to ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1).
Step 2: Choose Your Measurement Unit
Use the unit toggle in the top toolbar or press the number keys on your keyboard:
- cm (Key 1): Metric scale displaying centimeters, 5 mm half-marks, and 1 mm ticks.
- in (Key 2): Imperial scale with inches divided down to 1/16th inch precision.
- px (Key 3): Web design CSS pixel coordinates for UI designers and developers.
Step 3: Select Active Screen Edges
Click any of the four edge buttons (Top, Bottom, Left, or Right) in the toolbar. For vertical items, activate the left or right edge; for horizontal items, activate the top or bottom edge. You can enable all four edges simultaneously to turn your display into a four-sided measuring frame.
Step 4: Real-World Measuring Examples
💍 Measuring a Ring Size
Lay your existing ring flat against your phone or laptop screen edge. Measure the internal diameter from inside edge to inside edge in millimeters (e.g. 17.2 mm = EU Ring Size 54).
🔩 Identifying Screws & Bolts
Place the threaded shaft against the 0 mm mark. An outside thread width of 4 mm corresponds to an M4 bolt, 6 mm to M6, and 8 mm to M8.
💳 Checking ID & Card Dimensions
Standard bank cards, driver's licenses, and health insurance cards measure exactly 8.56 cm by 5.40 cm.
